Heat pump FAQs

How much does it cost to install a heat pump?

The cost of installation for heat pumps will differ between house type and size, as well as the heat pump chosen. Generally, an air source  heat pump will cost between £8,000-£15,000 to install, whereas a ground source heat pump could be anything up to £20,000.

Can I connect a heat pump to an existing heating system?

In short, yes. We would need to carry out a thorough heat loss calculation to assess the suitability and the type of heat pump required to maintain an efficient and industry recommended level of comfort within your home.

Will a heat pump save me money on my energy bills?

For a heat pump to save you money on your energy bills depends on several factors, including:

  • What fuel you are replacing and how much it costs
  • Your electricity tariffs
  • Which type of heat pump you install and how efficient it is
  • The design of your central heating system
  • Your location and its average air or ground temperatures throughout the year

If you are currently using a gas boiler, heat pumps are likely to be slightly more expensive to run. However, it is possible for a heat pump to save money if particular attention is paid to ensuring maximum efficiency of the pump in the heating system by using best practice radiator/underfloor heating design along with increased home insulation.

If you operate on LPG or oil, heat pumps should save you money on running costs assuming a well-designed system is installed.

Are heat pumps noisy?

Heat pumps have become more advanced over the years and any pump installed will operate at very low noise levels, especially by comparison to standard boilers.

What are the servicing requirements of a heat pump?

We recommend heat pumps are serviced annually to maintain efficiency. An Air Source heat pump requires the external unit to be kept free of leaves and debris, as well as any filters within being kept clean or replacing as specified by manufacturers.

What is the difference between an air and ground source heat pump?

Both heat pumps provide low-carbon and energy-efficient ways to heat your home but the main difference between them is the way they source their heat. Air source heat pumps utilises outside air and converts it into heat, whereas a ground source heat pump absorbs the constant temperature from the ground. Depending on your property type, there are many separate benefits to both ground and air source heat pumps.

How does a heat pump differ from a boiler?

A heat pump operates by using heat from the outside air/ground and transferring it inside your home, whereas a traditional boiler uses natural gas, propane or heating oil to create heat for your home which is then circulated through pipes.

Anthony is very reliable with him turning up when booked and keeping to time scales. He was clean tidy and left the area spotless. His work is of a very high standard which was reinforced when other tradesman commented on the pipe work fitted by him in the kitchen. I would highly recommend Anthony and would have no hesitation on passing his details onto many more friends and relatives.

Matt Painter

Highly recommend FastFlow. Anthony first came to fix the pump on my shower. He turned out to be brilliant. He first provided comprehensive advice and pricing options, then delivered a fast and efficient, quality service. So impressed with his expertise and helpful nature I asked him back to install a new heating control system and to service my boiler. Extremely pleased to have found the perfect plumber at last.
